Charter One Beefs Up MegaRewards Debit Card Program

Charter One Financial Inc. said users of its MegaRewards Debit MasterCard program can now view and redeem points online.

The service, which was introduced in December 2000, has more than 600,000 users. MegaRewards is a debit card program that enables cardholders to earn and redeem points toward free merchandise and travel benefits on purchases. For every dollar spent, Charter One MegaRewards customers earn one point towards merchandise.

“By enhancing the MegaRewards program with point information and shopping at charterone.com, we believe we can continue to build our customer base and retain loyal Charter One customers,” said David Bowen, senior vice president and retail product manager at Charter One, which is based in Cleveland.

The bank said its MegaRewards program is the first in the country that enables debit cardholders to redeem points and shop online and that it is one of the few debit card reward programs available.

The MegaRewards program is available to Charter One customers with a MasterMoney debit card and an active checking account.
