Carbite Golf Campaign Misses Green

Carbite Golf, a direct marketer of golfing equipment, announced yesterday that a failed telemarketing campaign contributed to an 11 percent decrease in sales compared with that of last year.

During the first nine months of the year, Carbite Golf, San Diego, saw its sales fall to $12.6 million, down from $14.1 million during the same period last year.

The company blamed the loss on the large amount of returned merchandise during the third quarter. Most of the returns were iron sets sold with a 90-day guarantee through a telemarketing campaign.

The company did not release details of the campaign but said it has been discontinued.

The company plans to refocus on retail sales in 2001 and launch a direct response television campaign which will feature golf star Fuzzy Zoeller.
