The highly sought-after CMP Media Inc. mailing lists and databases are coming home.
After two years under management at Worldata, Boca Raton, FL, the files were awarded June 3 to Database Marketing Concepts (DMC), Bohemia, NY, which is headed by former CMP in-house manager Peter Candito. DMC will take over the files July 1.
CMP, Manhasset, NY, publishes eight hi-tech, controlled-circulation magazines and the paid-circulation Windows Magazine with a total universe of more than 2.1 million names (not counting recent acquisitions). It also offers 27 segmented databases that cover the original equipment manufacturer, channel and technology buyer markets with a total universe of 1.7 million business technology builders, sellers and users and 1.3 million home users.
“We're intimately familiar with the product and the type of service level expected,'' said Candito, who spent 11 years as CMP senior director of direct marketing services before founding DMC in 1996. “We're a customer service company just like we were as the in-house list manager.''
Candito brought two former CMP staffers with him to DMC and plans to add as many as 10 people to manage what will become his company's largest property. DMC is an affiliate of the Communication Concepts group of companies based in Ivyland, PA, which includes Marketing Communications Systems, a service bureau that handles list rental fulfillment for the CMP files.
CMP has been searching for a new list manager since Worldata resigned management in April, effective June 30.
“With DMC's expertise in the high-technology field, first-hand knowledge of our lists and strategies for packaging these lists to meet customers' needs, we feel we have found an ideal partner to help us grow this business,'' Gretchen Teichgraeber, CMP's general manager of publishing, said in a prepared statement.
Candito said he intends to help CMP create more database lists and expand its international offerings.
“It was probably a good choice on CMP's part,'' said Worldata CEO Roy Schwedelson, who added that the CMP file brought in close to $12 million in revenue in the last 12 months.
Other hi-tech list managers were not surprised by CMP's selection.
“That was the logical choice, to select Pete,'' said Glenn Freedman, president of L.I.S.T. Inc., Great Neck, NY. “He had managed the files successfully in-house for many years and is well respected in the list industry. His company being a start-up company, he will be able to devote 100 percent of his time to the needs of CMP.”

The lists and databases associated with the former McGraw-Hill titles purchased by CMP last month — Byte, Data Communications, LAN Times, tele.com — will continue to be managed by the Lake Group, Rye, NY, but integration of the publications into CMP's new Business Computing and Communications Group already has begun. Publication of Byte will be suspended for several months, and Telepath, the monthly demographic edition of InternetWeek, will be folded into tele.com.
