Canada Post Raising Rates in 2004

Canada Post Corp.'s domestic basic letter rate will rise 1 cent to 49 cents Canadian effective Jan. 12, 2004, the company said late last month.

The company said that the Consumer Price Index triggered the rise, the first domestic stamp increase in two years.

Canada Post also announced proposed changes to several international rates. For example, letters, cards and postcards up to 30 grams destined for the United States would rise 15 cents to 80 cents. Letters, cards and postcards up to 30 grams to other non-Canadian destinations would climb 15 cents to $1.40.

Information on the proposed increase, which also would take effect Jan. 12, can be found at www.canadagazette.gc.ca.
