Brookstone Same-Store Sales Fall 17 Percent

Sales at Brookstone Inc. stores open at least one year dropped 17 percent during the third quarter, while direct-to-consumer sales saw a healthy increase.

The high-end gadget retailer was affected by lower sales in its airport and tourist locations after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks against the United States, the company said yesterday.

Total sales for the quarter fell 8.8 percent to $58.2 million from $63.8 million a year ago. However, sales in its direct-to-consumer segment, which includes three catalogs and an e-commerce site, rose 19.7 percent to $14 million compared with last year, the company said.

Brookstone, Nashua, NH, estimates a per-share net loss of $1.04 to $1.07 for the quarter.

Before Sept. 11, the company anticipated a 10 percent to 12 percent decline in same-store sales.
