Brookstone DTC Sales Rise 10.9 Percent

Brookstone Inc.'s sales in the direct-to-customer segment rose 10.9 percent to $14 million in its second quarter versus the same period last year based on a 12.5 percent increase in catalog circulation and growth in Internet transactions, the Nashua, NH, company said yesterday.

Brookstone also cited a strong Father's Day performance plus “continued customer demand for proprietary products” for a same-store sales increase in the quarter of 7.8 percent.

Total sales in the quarter ended Aug. 2 jumped 13 percent to $80.5 million from $71.2 million in the second quarter a year ago.

In the first six months of 2003, total sales climbed 10.6 percent to $141.4 million from $127.9 million in the first six months of 2002. Same-store sales for the first six months of 2003 were up 7 percent as DTC sales increased 5.1 percent to $24.1 million from $23 million.

Meanwhile, The Bombay Company Inc., Fort Worth, TX, late Tuesday announced that same-store sales for stores open more than a year rose 24 percent for the four weeks ended Aug. 2. Total revenue increased 30 percent to $39.5 million versus $30.3 million in the four weeks ended Aug. 3, 2002.

During its second quarter, same-store sales increased 26 percent as total revenue was up 30 percent to $130.3 million in the quarter ended Aug. 2. For the 26 weeks ended Aug. 2, same-store sales increased 25 percent as total revenue was up 31 percent to $249.5 million from last year's $190.9 million.
