B&N Forced to Change Checkout System

Online bookseller barnesandnoble.com, New York, said yesterday that it will accelerate rollout of new shopping technology in the wake of an injunction by a U.S. federal judge barring the company from using its current setup.

Rival e-tailer Amazon.com Inc., Seattle, filed a patent infringement suit against barnesandnoble.com earlier this year, alleging that its Express Lane checkout technology was a copy of Amazon.com’s own one-click checkout system.

Gus Carlson, vice president of corporate communications at barnesandnoble.com, said the company planned to file an appeal. The company will debut its new Express Checkout system, which he said was an improvement over the Express Lane system and would satisfy the judge’s injunction restrictions.
