Bebo brings e-mail together with social networks in new ‘Social Inbox’

There has been a lot of buzz around e-mail and social networking these days, which is why it is no surprise that social networking site Bebo is addressing the issue with a new offering.

The Bebo “Social Inbox” is a one-stop shop that combines e-mail, social networking and media recommendations into one interface.

“Keeping up with your friends has been too much these days, you have to be a member of a lot of these services just to keep up,” said David Liu, SVP of AOL People Network.

“Socially speaking there shouldn’t be a cookie cutter approach to social networking since different people communicate in different ways,” added Liu. “What is a social experience for someone in high school or college is different for someone with a job and a family.”

Bebo’s Social Inbox aggregates feeds and updates from Twitter, Flickr, Del.icio.us, YouTube and AIM; as well as access to Gmail, Yahoo Mail and AOL Mail. Users can personalize their social media inbox to include the social sites that they are a part of into the Bebo inbox.

“The social inbox allows hyper aggregation, and it helps us leapfrog from the inward view homepage of a social network,” Liu remarked. “The social inbox is your homepage or start page for the experience.”

This release is expected to be followed up by other releases, including a tool that will help advertisers communicate to users in this new social inbox, Liu said.
