The BBB Wise Giving Alliance has released a draft of its Standards for Charitable Accountability, which it plans to finalize by midyear.
The standards address accountability concerns such as use of funds, fundraising practices, donor privacy and spending funds in accordance with donor intentions.
The standards were developed with input from charitable organizations as well as accounting professionals, grant-making foundations, corporate foundation officers, regulatory agencies, research organizations and the Better Business Bureau system.
A copy of the proposed standards is posted on the BBB Wise Giving Alliance Web site and will remain there for public comment through May 15.
The alliance is affiliated with the Council of Better Business Bureaus.
