Barnes & Noble launches ‘Expert Circle’ microsite

Barnes & Noble launched the “B&N Kids’ Expert Circle” microsite October 11. The site targets parents and teachers with advice and purchase suggestions from experts on literacy, education, child development and pediatric medicine.

The Kids’ Expert Circle has three main sections: “Milestones & Stages,” “Learning & Development,” and “Tips & Parenting.” Each of these categories features various articles, each labeled for the appropriate age (“Baby,” 3-5 years old,” etc.), covering topics such as “How to Handle Temper Tantrums,” or “Choosing a Pediatrician.” There were nearly 30 such articles posted at the time of the site’s launch, with new pieces scheduled to be added regularly.

Each article includes an “Expert Pick” that readers can add instantly to their B&N online shopping cart. For example, readers of The Importance of Music for Young Children are directed to the book How to Grow a Young Music Lover, by Cheri Fuller. The site exists on barnesandnoble.com site, enabling viewers to browse the company’s other offerings.

“By focusing specifically on parents and educators, we were able to target an audience that already sees us as a trusted destination for quality children’s books, workbooks and toys, but does not yet look to us for general parenting advice and tips on raising children,” said Rachel Jarrett, director of kids and lifestyle products at Barnes & Noble. “We wanted to enhance our position as an authority on children and education.”

B&N is also touting the Kids’ Expert Circle in stores with display ads promoting the titles recommended by experts, ranging from pediatrician Laura Walther Nathanson to teacher Becky Bailey and radio host Leigh Bortins.
