Banks Will Market Vatican Card

Maxx International Inc., Los Angeles, sealed an agreement with the Vatican to market co-branded credit cards decorated with art from the Vatican Treasury.

Michael Solomon, chairman of Maxx International, said the company was negotiating with six banks for the opportunity to market the cards. The company has the right to distribute the cards in North and South America and Australia.

Maxx, which also runs a Protestant Web site at www.thegospel.com, also plans later this year to distribute Catholic books and a compact disc of papal prayers.

Despite reports of criticism from people who said the credit card program blended commercialism and spirituality, Solomon said the company had not heard any direct complaints.

“This is not controversial at all,” he said. “We haven't heard anything about this being controversial.”
