AT&T Launches Wireless Service

AT&T, Armonk, NY, yesterday launched its PocketNet mobile wireless Internet service — the first to offer unlimited use, according to the company.

AT&T said its service also is the first that is free to every subscriber. Most companies offering wireless Web service charge by the minute or deduct from a base of minutes that subscribers can use for phone calls or Internet access.

The service is available in three plans: The free basic plan offers unlimited use restricted to 40 designated Web sites. The $6.99 a month plan adds e-mail and fax services. The $14.99 a month plan also provides access to any Web site, as well as calendar and organizer services.

The service is only available on two cell phone models, one made by Ericsson the other by Mitsubishi. The service is not available in several major cities including Atlanta, Kansas City and New Orleans.
