App of the Week: Prismatic

Personalized news app Prismatic is straightforward and easy to use—simply set up a free account and select topics of interest. After that, the app will deliver relevant news stories that the user can read, like or dislike, comment on, discuss, and share via Twitter and Facebook.

The app’s developers state that Prismatic can find personalized material for users to peruse because the service scours the Internet for relevant and interesting stories, and its social integration delivers a more powerful experience for its users.

DMN reader Megan Wintersteen, lead planner, social, at agency HUGE raves about Prismatic because not only does it allow you to follow topics of interest, but it also serves users content based on what else they’re reading online. “It’s very good at predicting what users will be interested in reading before they even realize it,” she said, adding that because it also shows what friends are following and reading it lets you take a look at things through a different lens.

According to Prismatic CEO Bradford Cross, the app’s backend—complete with indexes of more than 10,000 topics—analyzes millions of stories each day. “We want to be like the daily newspaper for our generation, and so we wanted to see people visiting multiple times a day and hopefully about six days a week at least—and we are definitely seeing that, which really shows our concept is working,” Cross said in an interview with Gigaom.
