Amazon.com Inc. is heating up the competition in Canada with a 40 percent discount on its 40 top titles at Amazon.ca. The discount, begun last week, comes two months after launching a dedicated site for Canada.
The move is aimed at drawing customers away from Chapters.indigo.ca, the online arm of Canada's No. 1 bookseller, Indigo Books. Amazon.ca launched in July with a 30 percent discount on all books priced $19 and above, with free shipping for orders over $48.
Chapters.indigo.ca quickly followed suit, but would not go beyond 30 percent for fear of eroding profits. The Seattle retailer received complaints from Canadian customers sometime back that it was cheaper to buy books from Amazon's U. S. store, which offered a 30 percent discount on orders over $15.
