Brick-and-mortar retail chains already have their hands full rumbling with Amazon online. Now they’re going to have to battle the e-commerce king in the streets.
The store will open for the holiday shopping season on 7 West 34th Street in New York City, just one block from Macy’s flagship location, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. Amazon has long considered opening retail locations as showrooming sites to spur online sales, and the report speculated that the location could serve as a limited assortment hub for local deliveries.
The 12-story building is the former site of Ohrbach’s department store. It currently houses showrooms for housewares and gift companies, so it’s not likely that Amazon will take over the entire space.
