Amazon debuts mobile payment option

Amazon Payments LLC, an Amazon.com company, released a mobile payment system on October 5. Amazon Mobile Payments Service lets the company’s merchants process transactions via mobile phone and allows consumers to check out using Amazon’s 1-Click.

The payment system is targeted at developers, merchants and distributors of mobile applications. Its concept is to ease the check-out experience by connecting it to the Amazon back-end e-commerce fulfillment system. It also enables consumers to transfer data from an online profile to their mobile shopping profiles.

After signing in from an Amazon MPS-enabled device or mobile application, consumers can make future purchases from their mobile devices.

The payment system’s release comes as more retailers are moving into the mobile space. Ralph Lauren released a mobile store in August 2008 and Tommy Hilfiger opened its mobile shop last week.

In April, Amazon promoted a free payment processing offer to organizations that began accepting Checkout by Amazon or Amazon Simple Pay. The effort was used to build Amazon Payments.
