Agencies Warn of Tsunami Scams

Consumer protection agencies are issuing alerts related to fraudulent charities seeking donations for the victims of the tsunami in South Asia and East Africa.

Pennsylvania attorney general Jerry Pappert issued a warning yesterday urging consumers to be wary of solicitations for donations to help in tsunami aid efforts. Illinois attorney general Lisa Madigan, the Better Business Bureau, the Red Cross and others issued similar warnings last week.

Consumers can check with their state attorney general's office before donating to a charity. Pappert urged consumers to be wary of charities with similar-sounding names to established relief organizations and to ask questions, including how much of the donated money will go toward relief and how the money will be used.
