After seven years in my field, how do I take my career to the next level?

As Web 2.0 prepares to be replaced by Web 3.0 and beyond, marketing professionals need to keep on top of the multitude of available channels for reaching consumers and accept continuous change as a way of life. That said, some basic rules still apply.

First, whatever your discipline, work to become a true expert. If there are gaps in your professional knowledge and experience, fill them now. Request new assignments

or a transfer or attend seminars, but do whatever it takes. At Draftfcb we always need people with deep subject matter expertise, but we are going one step further by also training “Renaissance practitioners.” These are individuals who have deep knowledge and experience across multiple channels. They value the quality of the idea first and are truly media-neutral and channel-agnostic.

No matter which route you choose, it is critical that you seek out and build relationships with senior leaders within your own firm. Watch them in action, and learn from them daily. Finally, make sure you are immersed in new developments

and are actively seeking out information and resources on developing trends and how they will impact your business in the future.

This is also the time in your career that you may begin managing others and teams. For the first time, you will be evaluated not just on individual performance,

but on how well you lead, motivate and manage others. This is a major transition for most people, and one some people are never able to successfully make. It will likely be the critical determining factor in how far and how fast you rise in the organization, and now is the time to begin working to develop those skills
