After Flat Levels, Crandall Salary Survey Sees Increases

Salaries in direct and interactive marketing are on the upswing across the board, according to Crandall Associates Inc.'s National Salary Guide 2006. Newly measured interactive marketing positions also highlight this year's survey.

After several years of fairly flat salary levels, Crandall is seeing an increase in salaries, said Crandall president Wendy Crandall Weber, who attributed the rise to the strengthening economy and more competition for good candidates.

For the first time, the survey includes incomes for e-mail marketing managers, search engine optimization managers and Web site managers. SEO managers with one to three years of experience are likely to earn $45,100 to $55,500 annually. Those with more experience earn up to $75,100 on average. The highest reported salary was $100,000.

E-mail marketing managers earn $60,200 to $69,100 on average with up to three years of experience, and up to $72,300 with four to seven years of experience. The highest reported salary was $95,000.

Database marketing professionals continue to be among the best paid in the industry.

“The design, maintenance and manipulation of data can truly make the difference between a profitable campaign and one that is not,” Crandall said.

Database vice presidents earn anywhere from $109,400 to $165,800 on average. The highest salary was $310,000, according to the report. Marketing and circulation vice presidents earn slightly more at the higher end of the bracket. However, database vice presidents start with higher salaries.

Crandall, Port Washington, NY, an executive recruitment firm, conducts the survey by interviewing employees and employers in companies nationwide. The 2006 National Direct & Interactive Marketing Salary Guide can be ordered at for $75.
