Ad Guru Jay Chiat Dies at 70

Advertising pioneer Jay Chiat died yesterday near Los Angeles after a battle with cancer, according to a report on adage.com. He was 70.

Born, raised and educated in the Northeast, Chiat didn't begin his advertising career until he moved to California. After spending several years as a copywriter and then opening his own agency, Chiat teamed with Guy Day in 1968 to form their namesake advertising agency Chiat/Day.

Chiat/Day counted Apple Computer, Honda and Energizer among its clients and was responsible for creating the well-known Apple “1984” ad, which aired during the Super Bowl.

The agency was sold to Omnicom Group in 1996 and merged with TBWA. In recent years, Chiat was chairman emeritus of ScreamingMedia Inc.
