40 Under 40 2016: Nidhi Gupta, Western Union

Nidhi Gupta, Director of global marketing, Western Union, 38

Nidhi Gupta began her career at Nestlé, where she grew its culinary and confectionery international business multifold. After a stint at TiE Silicon Valley, Gupta joined Western Union, a leader in global payment services.

Until recently, she led marketing for the company’s online and mobile app money transfer business for the Americas region. She now heads global marketing for WU Connect, an innovative technology solution that embeds Western Union’s money transfer capability into partner platforms, including apps such as WeChat and Viber.

What has been your proudest career accomplishment to date?

Growing Western Union’s digital business multifold over a period of three years. In particular, I am proud of the mobile-first approach we adopted, growing penetration of money transfer transactions on mobile from single digits to 55% in 2015.

What’s the best piece of advice you can give to future 40 Under 40 honorees?

Keep learning. As long as you’re learning, you’re growing. Challenge yourself and push your boundaries. Also, it’s equally important to seek out an employer that shares the same values as you.

What do you hope to accomplish in the next five years?

I hope to keep working on breakthrough technology within the fintech and payments space to serve our customers better. I also want to continue to forge stronger partnerships with our IT teams to deliver superlative customer experience and data-driven marketing.

I’d love to see virtual reality experiences become a bigger part of our repertoire and my work, as well as content and influencers marketing.

What is one interesting fact about you that few people know?

I never planned to be a marketer—I was passionate about becoming an architect. I had even applied to and got into some of the best schools. Later, when I found I could apply the same mix of creativity and science in marketing, I switched my choice. Haven’t regretted it.
