1-800-Flowers Sprouts $1.8M Profit for Q2

1-800-Flowers.com turned a profit for its fiscal second quarter and its revenue rose nearly 21 percent, the multichannel flower and gift retailer said yesterday.

Revenue for the quarter ended Dec. 30 increased 20.9 percent to $162.3 million, from $134.2 million in the previous second quarter, the company said. Net income for the second quarter rose to $1.8 million, or 3 cents per share, from a loss of $10.5 million, or 16 cents per share, a year earlier.

1-800-Flowers.com also said that combined online and telephonic revenue grew 21.4 percent to $154 million in the second quarter, from $126.9 million in 2000. Online revenue rose 26.8 percent to $60.5 million, representing 37.3 percent of total net revenue, compared with $47.7 million, or 35.5 percent, the previous year. Telephonic revenue for the quarter increased 18.1 percent to $93.6 million, up from $79.2 million.

Non-floral gifts represented 62.1 percent of total combined online and telephonic revenue in the quarter, up from 55.7 percent in the same period in 2000.

The company said it expects revenue growth of 11 percent to 13 percent, or $114 million to $116 million, in its fiscal third quarter, which ends March 31. For the full year, 1-800-Flowers.com forecasts total revenue to grow 13 percent to 24 percent, to between $500 million and $505 million.
