World Phone Leaders to Test Wireless Technology

British Telecommunications, London, and AT&T Corp., Basking Ridge, NJ, said yesterday that they will begin trials to see if people can use mobile Internet phones outside of their own country.

The companies will partner with SmarTone of Hong Kong and FarEasTone of Taiwan to test roaming access for high-speed Internet phones.

The main part of the testing will focus on General Packet Radio Services, technology that should greatly speed up mobile Internet phone access, when it is launched in the second half of this year. The technology is 10 times faster than current wireless Web transmissions and will allow for streams of customized news and video applications.
