Wood succeeds Ervin as managing editor, Campanelli named deputy editor

DM News is proud to announce the promotion of news editor Cara Wood to the managing editor's post.

She takes over from John Ervin, who served as news editor from May 2000 until his promotion to managing editor in April 2006. Mr. Ervin returns to former employer Gannett Co.'s The Journal News in White Plains, NY, as copy editor.

"John will be greatly missed," said Mickey Alam Khan, DM News' editor in chief. "Every article that went through his hands was a diamond polished to brilliance. My colleagues and I consider John one of the best editors we've ever worked with.

"Luckily for us, we also have an equally sharp editor in Cara," he said. "As news editor, she maintained the quality of DM News' online operations. Now she'll extend that expertise and diligence to the publication's print products as well."

Mr. Ervin was copy editor on The Journal News for 10 years before joining DM News. He is a native of Ohio and lives in upstate New York. With this move, he will regain three hours of his life each day.

Ms. Wood assumes her new post with the Feb. 12 issue. A native of Boston, she was associate editor and project manager at Victory Productions in Worcester, MA, before joining DM News. She also served in the communications department of Shakespeare's Globe theatre in London.

She holds a master's degree in professional communications from Clark University, Worcester.

DM News also promoted senior editor Melissa Campanelli to deputy editor. She will continue to cover postal affairs, shipping, regulation and database marketing, among other issues. She adds the responsibility of helping the editor with DM News' magazine supplements.

A resident of Brooklyn, Ms. Campanelli joined DM News in summer 1997. She is widely considered the nation's preeminent reporter on postal affairs and database marketing.

"We get withdrawal symptoms if we don't see at least one, if not two, postal stories each day from Melissa," Mr. Alam Khan said. "It's a pleasure to work with a marketing journalist who's at the top of her game and who knows direct, interactive and database marketing in and out." n
