Wikipedia Reaches No. 2 in Hitwise Ranking

Internet monitor Hitwise said Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, is becoming one of the most visited reference sites online.


The site's total share of visits jumped 285 percent for the week ended April 16 versus the week ended April 17, 2004, making it the second most visited reference site. It was No. 3 in the Hitwise Education-Reference category at the start of 2005.


Wikipedia trails Dictionary.com but leads About.com, Answers.com, Encarta, Merriam-Webster Online at m-w.com and Free Translation for traffic in the week ended April 16.
