Wientzen: Postal Reform, Market Share Top Cataloging Issues

CHICAGO -- The two main challenges facing the catalog industry are postal reform and building market share, DMA president/CEO H. Robert Wientzen said yesterday.

Wientzen also issued a call to action to all catalogers at the Direct Marketing Association's 19th Annual Catalog Conference & Exhibition, urging them to get involved with the push for postal reform by going directly to Congress with their concerns and exactly how postal issues affect their businesses.

Wientzen then addressed the issue of market share. Though catalog sales are up, only 40 percent of Americans shopped from home in the year 2000, he said. While he said that the Web is a help in increasing that number, it isn't enough.

"Web or no Web, clearly we as an industry must build our market share," Wientzen said.
