WCities Expands Reach With Wireless Service

WCities, a provider of location-based information on cities, recently launched wireless travel guides that provide a text-only version of www.wcities.com's content.

WCities covers 286 cities with plans to cover 400 by the first quarter and 700 cities by year's end. The guides provide information on hotels, restaurants, sporting events, entertainment, shopping and transportation.

The company's business model is not based on advertising. The content is available through syndication by wireless carriers. British Telecom, for example, invested $15 million for a 17 percent stake in the company and will syndicate content to its wireless customers.

WCities is in discussions with a number of U.S. companies to syndicate content to their wireless devices. WCities is engaged in technical trials with cell-phone manufacturer Ericsson.
