Verizon Wireless Plans Maryland Call Center

Verizon Wireless will open a 139,000-square-foot, $22 million customer service call center in Hanover, MD, late this year, the company said yesterday.

The company looks to hire 300 customer service reps for the center over the rest of the year. The new facility gives Verizon Wireless enough spare capacity to eventually expand its customer service operation from 500 currently to 1,100.

In addition, the new call center will serve as headquarters for Verizon Wireless' regional customer service division. Verizon Wireless said it was building the facility in response to growing demand, with 1.9 million net new customers in the second quarter of 2005.
