USPS to test new shipping service

The US Postal Service will market test a new competitive, less-than-truckload shipping service known as Collaborative Logistics.

The Postal Regulatory Commission signed off on the USPS proposal, which gives the postal agency two years to conduct the market test. The PRC directed the agency to provide regular quarterly and annual reports detailing performance results, and also required it to provide more substantive supporting documentation in future market test proposals.

At the time the USPS filed the test proposal in April, the agency noted, ‘‘the natural imbalance of mail volume between cities and the need to meet operating plans to support service standards makes some underutilized space on some highway transportation predictable.'' The USPS proposed to sell the available space during the market test.

The USPS defined the experimental product as ‘‘transportation of an article or multiple articles on a pallet or other unit load, on a space-available basis, in postal  transportation.''
