USPS Senior VPs to Retire Next Month; More Retooling to Come

The U.S. Postal Service's sales and marketing department will most likely be reorganized in the next few months after two top executives announced their retirements earlier this month.

Allen R. Kane, senior vice president of future business design, and Gail Sonnenberg, vice president of sales, will leave the USPS next month.

The announcements came as little surprise to the mailing industry, which has heard rumors for weeks that the retirements may take place and that Jack Potter, the new postmaster general, wants to rework the sales function to be more efficient and ultimately help the agency build more revenue.

Kane will retire to pursue a career in the private sector effective Sept. 8. He joined the USPS as a management associate in the operations department of the Jamaica, NY, post office in 1971 and became Northeast regional director of operations support before being appointed assistant postmaster general of the mail processing department in 1987.

"The decision to leave the postal service for new opportunities and new growth is both tremendously exciting and sad," Kane said. "After 30 years, I have strong connections with our customers and postal employees all over the United States."

Sonnenberg has announced she will retire at the end of the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 7.

Potter said Sonnenberg's "leadership in laying the foundation for a comprehensive approach to commercial sales has made an important contribution to the postal service."
