UPS, Teamsters Resume Talks Today

Negotiations between United Parcel Service and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters are scheduled to resume today amid news that the Teamsters is concerned about the latest economic proposal from UPS.

The Teamsters National UPS Negotiating Committee presented the company late last week with an amended economic proposal after examining a proposal from UPS. No further details about the offer were available.

"We are very far apart on the economic terms of the contract," said Ken Hall, co-chair of the Teamsters committee.

The current agreement, covering more than 210,000 workers at UPS, expires July 31.

UPS is more positive.

"The momentum has picked up over the past few weeks, and we are moving forward," UPS spokesman Norma Black said. "The exchange of economic proposals represents a significant step in the negotiations process as both the company and the Teamsters prepare counterproposals on economic issues. UPS remains optimistic that a balanced and fair agreement can be reached in a timely fashion with no disruption of service to customers."
