Teamsters Ratify Freight Agreement

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters said yesterday that freight members ratified a new five-year agreement with four less-than-truckload freight carriers.

The contract, which covers about 65,000 Teamsters, was ratified with 84 percent of Teamsters voting to support it. Voting took place during the past three weeks.

The less-than-truckload freight carriers are ABF Freight System, a unit of Arkansas Best Corp.; Roadway Express, a unit of Roadway Corp.; Yellow Freight, a unit of Yellow Corp.; and USF Holland, a unit of USFreightways Corp.

LTL freight carriers commonly ship items weighing 600 to 1,000 pounds. They operate through a hub system in which an LTL carrier picks up packages from multiple customers, then consolidates goods traveling the same route.

The former contract expired March 31.
