Tabloid Publisher to Buy Fitness Publisher

Tabloid publisher American Media last week was expected to announce its purchase of health and fitness publisher Weider Publications for $350 million, according to reports.

American Media, which owns titles such as The National Enquirer, The Star, The Globe, The National Examiner and The Sun, will add seven magazines including Muscle & Fitness, Men's Health, Flex and Shape through the acquisition.

The deal reportedly does not include Weider's vitamin and nutrition business.

The acquisition follows several failed attempts to pick up other consumer titles such as EMAP's United States magazines and the Times Mirror magazines, according to the New York Times.

Investment firm Evercore Partners principally owns American Media.
