Tableau releases Tableau Server

Tableau Software has launched Tableau Server, a Web-based platform for sharing and publishing data.

Tableau Server works with the analytical software of Tableau Desktop to create visual representations of data. The dashboards created with the program can then be shared over a secure network in real time.

Administrators control how the data and analyses are shared, but Tableau Server allows multiple users to interact with and search data visualizations. Users not only interact with the data but with each other. Tableau Server provides space for message board discussions, tags and notes.

Seattle-based Tableau Software has also released its Tableau Reader software. The free application works like Adobe Reader, allowing users to view and interact with data visualizations created on Tableau Desktop. Reader differs from Server in that Reader users will not be able to access live data, tag or permanently change dashboards.

Tableau executives have said they designed Server with the every day office worker, not the IT department, in mind. The program has a drag-and-drop interface to cut down on user-training time, and it can be managed via Microsoft Active Directory applications. Only one data-user needs to have Tableau Desktop installed.

Jacksonville State University has already signed on to use Tableau Server. The more than 1,000-person faculty and staff will use Server to manage administrative, enrollment and assessment data across departments.
