Swamped Call Center Leads to Online DNC Registration

The Indiana attorney general is setting up a Web site for residents of the state to register for its do-not-call list after the call center hired to handle registration was flooded with inbound calls.

Indiana's DNC list Web site is scheduled to launch Monday. In addition to providing for DNC list registration, the site will include information about consumer rights, recalls and fraud protection.

Calls to a toll-free number operated by CallNet, a teleservices firm contracted to handle telephone DNC registration for $130,000, failed to get through in many cases because of high volume. In one five-day period, CallNet, Bloomington, IN, received 15,000 calls, but its call center can handle only 39 calls at a time.

Instituting an online sign-up option for consumers was part of the state's plan for implementing the DNC list from the beginning, a spokeswoman for the attorney general's office said.

Indiana's DNC list takes effect Jan. 1. More than 204,000 consumers in the state have registered so far.
