Survey: Direct Mail Solicitation Figures Drop in Q3

The number of direct mail solicitations dipped in the third quarter after rising at a record pace for the first six months of last year, according to a survey released yesterday by Comperemedia, a media monitoring company in Chicago.

The total number of direct mail solicitations tracked by Comperemedia in the third quarter was 1.9 billion, down from 2.3 billion in the second quarter. This was the first time in 2001 that the number of solicitations dropped.

The busiest month for the third quarter was July, the survey found, when consumers received an estimated 708 million direct mail pieces.

Looking ahead to fourth-quarter results, Comperemedia said the mail volume estimate for October was one of the year's highest, indicating that companies proceeded with original plans to send out mail and consumers received that mail despite the anthrax scare.

Through October, Comperemedia estimates that almost 7.1 billion pieces of direct mail were sent offering products in banking, credit cards, insurance, investment, mortgage and loan, technology, telecommunications and travel and leisure.
