Staples Sales Rise 5% for Quarter

Staples Inc. posted net income of $60 million for the fiscal second quarter ended Aug. 3 while sales rose 5 percent to $2.43 billion from $2.31 billion in the same period last year, the Framingham, MA, company said yesterday.


In the North American Retail business, sales in the quarter totaled $1.46 billion, up 2 percent from last year. Business unit income reached $46 million, a 14 percent increase.


Staples North American Delivery reported second fiscal quarter sales of $781 million, up 8 percent. Business unit income totaled $57 million, a 22 percent increase.


Contract account acquisition efforts resulted in 11 percent sales growth with the addition of 2,600 accounts in the quarter. Staples Business Delivery increased sales 4 percent. Quill produced 7 percent sales growth in the quarter.


On July 17, Staples closed the previously announced acquisition of Medical Arts Press, a direct marketer of specialized printed office products and practice-related supplies for medical offices.
