Share Group to Acquire Great Lakes Communication

Share Group, Somerville, MA, a teleservices provider for nonprofits, will gain access to alumni associations and traditional charities with its recent acquisition of major competitor Great Lakes Communications, Milwaukee, a national nonprofit direct marketing firm.


Share, which is focused on environmental, political, gay/lesbian and women's movement issues, is seeking to provide services to a broader range of nonprofits, according to Dennis McCarthy, president, Share. "We want to expand into more traditional charities," he said.


Great Lakes' clients include the Boston Museum of Science, Ducks Unlimited, American Jewish Congress and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.


During the next several months, client services and corporate operations, including 30 employees from Great Lakes Communications' Boston office, will be relocated to Share's Somerville headquarters.


Great Lakes President Jerry Benjamin will be assisting in the transition. "Though his role in Share is not clear at this point," said McCarthy, "it is likely his position will be strategic rather than client driven."


In another move to expand its focus, Share has formed an advisory board of political, business and communications experts to provide strategic expertise to Share's senior management team. The advisory board includes Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pulitzer Prize recipient and former aide to President Lyndon Johnson; Chester Atkins, former US Congressman, now manager of ADS Ventures, a public affairs and business consulting practice; Alan Solomont, former chairman of the Finance Committee of the Democratic National Committee; Arnold Miller, principle at Issacson and Miller, a nationally recognized executive search and placement firm that places management staffing with key nonprofit organizations across the US.
