SBC Will Use Compaq Computers for Broadband Access Program

SBC Internet Services has selected Compaq Computer Corp. as the provider of DSL-equipped personal computers for a new program designed to expand customer access to affordable, high-speed broadband Internet lines, the companies announced yesterday.

Customers will be able to access the bundled combination of a DSL-equipped Compaq computer and broadband access. Users insert special DSL filters into phone jacks that support analog phones and fax machines to filter out the DSL signal.

The filter eliminates the need for a technician to install splitters at customers' locations, and it enables them to simultaneously surf the Web and talk on the phone through a single line.
