Russia, China, U.S. Get New MagazinesThe magazine business can expect several launches in Russia, China and the United States in the next few months.
Meredith Corp. partnered with Chinese publisher SEEC Media to introduce Better Homes and Gardens. The multiyear licensing deal gives SEEC the right to publish and distribute Meredith's flagship in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
The Chinese-language Better Homes and Gardens launches later this year, pulling articles from the U.S. edition and SEEC's special-interest titles. It will target Chinese middle-class families with ideas for better household management.
Russia gets its own version of design and modern living title Wallpaper. IPC Media struck a 10-year licensing deal with Axel Springer Russia to publish Wallpaper in Russian. This is Wallpaper's first local-language edition.
Translated from the English edition, Wallpaper Russia also will source copy from its own market. The magazine targets Moscow's young, affluent and well-educated crowd. The March edition goes on sale Feb. 28.
Axel Springer Russia, a division of Germany's Axel Springer AG, last year started publishing Russian-language editions of Forbes and Newsweek.
In the United States, Doubledown Media launches Justice magazine June 21. The bimonthly title will capitalize on the country's fascination with crime, trials and criminal justice. Comag, a joint venture of Hearst and Condé Nast, will distribute the 250,000-circulation magazine.
Justice is Doubledown's second launch in less than a year, after the fall debut of Trader Monthly, an after-hours lifestyle and strategy magazine for professional traders.
Also, Working Mother magazine will introduce Working Through Pregnancy with spring/summer and fall/winter issues this year. Working Through Pregnancy eyes a market of 2 million working women who give birth each year, spending $32 billion in the process.
This new guide to lifestyle and work during pregnancy starts with a circulation of 350,000, of which 50,000 will be distributed to human resources departments at Fortune 500 companies and the rest at obstetricians' offices. The first issue is due May 3.
