Rocky Mountain News staff make bid to save paper

Editorial staffers for the Denver-based Rocky Mountain News have launched a Web site to help prevent the paper from shuttering.

The site, www.iwantmyrocky.com, launched on Dec. 15 as a way for readers to leave comments and voice their support for the paper and for the paper's staff to tout the good it does and the hole in the community that would be left if it was shut down, according to the site.

A week before the site went up the paper's owner, E.W. Scripps Co., told employees the paper was for sale and might be closed if a buyer wasn't found.

“We meet in this strange place in a noble effort to save the Rocky Mountain News,” reads a statement on the site written by Mike Littwin, a columnist for the newspaper. "And if we can't save the Rocky, we can, at minimum, make some noise before we go.”

The Rocky Mountain News has an editorial staff of 200 employees and has been published since 1859.
