Qualcomm Dials Nine Dots Number for Interactive

Telecommunications marketer Qualcomm Inc. has named Nine Dots' Irvine, CA, office as interactive agency of record for its Qualcomm Internet Services division.

Four agencies competed for the account. There was no incumbent on this new line of business for Qualcomm, San Diego.

The agency is asked to help develop and implement online the developer alliance program for Qualcomm's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless applications platform.

"The mandate is to help them establish BREW in the developer community and to help them build BREW as the wireless development platform of the future," said Craig Holland, vice president and managing director of Nine Dots.

Nine Dots recently won work for Levi Strauss & Co. (Canada) Inc. It also handles Nestle USA, Fujitsu, Northwest Airlines, Visa International and Quaker Oats Co. Headquartered in Portland, OR, it is majority-owned by Canadian marketing conglomerate MDC Corp. Inc.

Billings on the Qualcomm account were not disclosed.

The BREW developer alliance program helps Qualcomm Internet Services target software developers that are building applications for BREW-enabled devices. BREW launched as a technology in February. It was presented to the developer community in May.

Nine Dots will offer marketing strategy, interactive sites, program development and execution, extranets and video creation. But the agency has its work cut out, especially in the competitive Web wireless software market.

"Any time you launch a product or development platform, you have to move quickly and you have to establish a connection with the target audience," Holland said
