Software direct marketer Programmer's Paradise Inc., Shrewsbury, NJ, reported that net sales for the first quarter ended March 31 increased 36.8 percent to $53.2 million, from $38.9 million for the same period last year. Net income for the first quarter of 1998 was $746,000, a 15.7 percent drop from $885,000 last year.

"Revenues in the catalog channel decreased by 14 percent over the first quarter of 1997, due primarily to the impact from the Microsoft Developer Days event that occurred in 1997," said Roger Paradis, president and CEO. Microsoft Developer Days was a multicity tour in which Microsoft introduced an array of new products.

"One of the key drivers for our catalog business is new product introductions," Paradis added. "Similar to the fourth quarter of 1997, this past quarter was relatively devoid of any new product rollouts. Looking forward, we are encouraged by the schedule of planned upgrades and releases for the third quarter and beyond."
