MeadWestvaco to Close 2 Plants, Cut 600 Jobs
The St. Joseph, MO, and Garland, TX, facilities will close by year's end. MeadWestvaco will transfer production to other sites in North America without affecting production capacity, the company said.
The consolidation will eliminate 400 employees in the St. Joseph plant and 200 in Garland. In December, MeadWestvaco announced a two-year, $500 million consolidation that would include a workforce reduction of 1,000 employees in total in 2004.
MeadWestvaco, Stamford, CT, has been consolidating since forming from the merger of The Mead Corp. and Westvaco Corp. in 2002.
