Target announced today that its own forensic investigation found that up to 70 million customers were affected by its holiday data breach, making it one of the largest such data thefts on record. The probe also learned that, in addition to payment card data, some customers' names, phone numbers, and mailing and email addresses were also obtained.

Hackers did not score all of that information for each customer breached, but Target said that it will contact those customers for whom it has email addresses and provide them information about guarding against scams. The retailers promised that its “guests” will have zero liability for any fraudulent charges arising from the breach.

Transparency appears to be the byword in Target's handling of the situation. “I want our guests to know that understanding and sharing the facts related to this incident is important to me and the entire Target team,” said President and CEO Gregg Steinhafel.
