Privacy Council Unveils Compliance Products

The Privacy Council released a suite of privacy compliance tools and products for businesses yesterday.

It includes the Privacy Survival Kit, which deals with issues such as compliance with the Gramm Leach Bliley Financial Modernization Act, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and the "safe harbor" provisions.

Privacy Scan is another product in the suite. It checks Web sites for first- and third-party cookies, HTML forms, third-party links, Web beacons and data spillage, among other things. It also checks all pages within a site for compliance with the site's privacy policy.

The Privacy Council also offers P3P compliance programs, which help Web site operators comply with the Platform for Privacy Preferences.

P3P is a technology that lets Web surfers match their privacy preferences against the information-gathering practices of the sites they visit without having to read the sites' privacy policies. It is built into Microsoft's new Internet Explorer 6.0 browser.

The final element of the product suite is Privacy Safe. It is an independent verification program that helps companies implement a Web privacy plan and monitors Web sites for consistent compliance with the plan.

More information on this suite of tools and products can be found at www.privacycouncil.com.
