Postmaster general taps new head of U.S. Postal Inspection Service

Postmaster General John E. Potter has appointed Alexander Lazaroff, vice president of Eastern area operations for the U.S. Postal Service, to serve as chief postal inspector of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Mr. Lazaroff, who becomes the 36th chief postal inspector, will assume his new duties following the retirement of current chief postal inspector Lee R. Heath at the end of this year.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is the investigative and security arm of the U.S. Postal Service, responsible for the protection of postal employees, security, crime prevention programs, and enforcing criminal and civil statutes against individuals who misuse the mail.

In his current position as area vice president, Mr. Lazaroff manages postal operations throughout Delaware, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia, along with neighboring areas in Southern New Jersey, Virginia and Indiana.

The Eastern area employs 91,000 career postal employees working at more than 6,800 post offices.

Mr. Lazaroff previously served as district manager in Philadelphia, Cleveland, Boston and Connecticut. He also served as Northeast area manager of Operations Support.

A long-term postal employee, Mr. Lazaroff began his career as a distribution clerk in Massachusetts in 1973 and joined the Postal Inspection Service in 1977. A U.S. Navy veteran, he holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts and a MBA from the University of Rhode Island.
