Sanitization Begins at NJ Postal Facility

Electron-beam sanitization began yesterday on mail that had been inside the processing and distribution center in Trenton, NJ, when it temporarily closed Oct. 18, according to the U.S. Postal Service's Web site.


The first truckload of mail from the Trenton center arrived around noon yesterday at the Ion Beam Applications Inc. facility in Bridgeport, NJ.


On Nov. 6, the USPS awarded an estimated $2.4 million contract to IBA, which is temporarily dedicating its facility to mail sanitization. Delivery to postal customers is expected to begin as early as next week.


In addition, the stamp fulfillment center in Kansas City, MO, reopened yesterday following decontamination. According to the USPS Web site, postal employees are working to clear a backlog of postage orders that developed when the facility temporarily closed Oct. 31.
