IAB creates office of general counsel, promotes three

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), an organization that counts more than 450 US media and technology companies as members, has created an office of general counsel and promoted three executives.

The group promoted former VP of Public Policy Mike Zaneis to SVP and general counsel, a position IAB created to bolster the digital marketing industry's interests in Washington, DC.

Zaneis said the move has been in the works for the past half-year, and it is not related to the recent Federal Trade Commission report criticizing the marketing industry for having "fallen short" in terms of protecting consumer data through self-regulation. The report, which was the culmination of a year of FTC discussions, called for the implementation of a universal “Do-Not-Track” option. Lawmakers introduced numerous privacy bills in the current Congress, but none gained the necessary traction to become law.

“We've been talking about this move for the last six months,” he said. “[The IAB has] always done this type of work out of our office. This move allows us to use some of our outside legal resources in a more efficient way.”

Zaneis will continue to manage IAB's public policy office and guide the organization's self-regulatory privacy program. He will also oversee outside counsel and coordinate all IAB legal resources in industry relations, public policy and other initiatives, according to IAB.

David Doty, former SVP for marketing and thought leadership at IAB, was named SVP and CMO, also a newly created role. He will lead the organization's communication of interactive marketing's value to marketers, advertising agencies and other key constituents.

Patrick Dolan, former EVP and chief administrative officer, was named EVP and COO.
