Pitney Bowes Inc.'s small-business Internet division, PitneyWorks.com, is providing its ClickStamp Online Internet postage customers with a 1-cent discount on the new single-piece postage rate, the company said yesterday.

The mail and messaging management vendor, based in Stamford, CT, said the program was launched to help small businesses beat the postage rate increase. On Sunday, the postal rate for mailing a letter went up 1 cent, from 33 to 34 cents. Overall, postage rates increased 4.6 percent.

ClickStamp Online costs $1.49 per month. Anyone who signs up for the service prior to Jan. 31 will receive the 1-cent discount.

"Throughout the year, customers will continue to pay 34 cents for their First-Class postage, and in January 2002, we will provide them with a reimbursement," said Jennifer Panaro, a PitneyWorks spokeswoman.

Panaro said the U.S. Postal Service is aware of the promotion.

"This program reinforces our commitment to help small-business owners manage their everyday transactions. Every penny counts when you're running a small business," said Lisa DeBois, president of PitneyWorks. "That's why we're offering small-business customers a way to avoid this increase in postage rates. We want to help minimize the blow to their wallets so they can stay focused on their top priority -- getting and keeping customers."

Pitney Bowes' offer is for mailers who send up to 5,000 pieces of mail this year. It is open to both current customers and those who register at the PitneyWorks Web site, www.pitneyworks.com.

Marty Petsonk, owner of Drug and Alcohol Screening Services, Artesia, NM, and a ClickWorks customer, said, "As a small-business owner, perks don't come along too often. With ClickStamp and this promotion, I can save money and enjoy the convenience of printing postage from my computer whenever I need it."
